I’ve added two conference papers that I presented over the past academic year (one at FAU, the other at Purdue University) to the site. Find links to them on my “Other Writing” page.
The two papers are very similar, as the one is a revision of the other. I’m not sure which I would recommend people to read. One presents some features of a cognitive literary theory, while the other does so in the context of critiquing poststructuralism. It depends on one’s interests for which would be more useful. There is content in each that is not in the other.
I also added a poem to the site, linked as above, which I wrote in 1999. I’ve been thinking that I want to add more of some of my older writing to this website. Hopefully I will continue to do so.
As always, if you have any comments, please let me know.

I did graduate last Spring, and I’ve moved back to Florida. I am now an Adjunct Professor at a local college.
Last fall I rewrote the prologue to Angie to give it a “softer” open, and Angie is now near some editor’s desk awaiting consideration. I also spent a bit of time reworking a few chapters of Looming Thunderheads to make them stronger, hopefully. I’m going to read through the text again and then hopefully Looming can go sit on some editor’s desk for a few months too.
I’ve applied to a few PhD programs, and we’ll see if I get accepted into those. If not, I may spend some of my time doing my own Literary Critical research and thinking. I have ideas, I do.
Meanwhile I think I want to return to Death and Life, as I have been mulling over how to narrate that story for some time, and I want to try and see if it works. That means redoing what I have, but for the better I think. We’ll see.
I also intend to update the website soon, and that may mean ditching this WordPress journal for something I write myself. Not sure if I want to spend the time programming that project, but for very many reasons I want to change this part of the site.
I apologize for the long-broken sections of the site, and the weird accumulation of various stages of page revisions. Hopefully as I move forward with this project I can fix that. We’ll see.
Hey, if you’re reading this, drop me a line. Thanks!

I’ve made a ‘Projects’ section on the main page of the website. This comes out of uncertainty in my next project. I’ve worked through quite a bit of Samantha, but I’ve reached a point where I need to reconsider the structure of the narrative. While I let that problem stew in the background, I’ve started planning The Death of Aaron Jamison, which is based on a Short Story I wrote in 1999 called ‘Funeral’. I’m not sure if I can expand that story into a full novel, but it’s something I’ve wanted to write for a very long time. So I’ve added it to my list of projects. I also included Between the Stars because I intend to work on that as well.
In the future, I will update progress on each of those projects and I will add to the list as I spread my attention. At some point one of those will become my ‘Primary’ project, and that will be reflected. There may come a time when some item on the list will be set aside, put in a drawer, as it were. I cannot predict that, but every once in a while a story dies. It’s happened a hundred times and more through the course of my writing life.
In the mean time, progress is varied and slight. Distractions abound.

I have written a review of Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker and put it up in the ‘essays’ section of my website. Find it here.
The review does not spoil the plot of the novel. If you read it, I would appreciate feedback.

I have put up the essay I mentioned in my previous posting here.
I submitted it as part of my application to grad school. It is predominantly a revision of my earlier essay ‘On Fiction‘
If you read it, please send comments! Even though it’s already been submitted, I am interested in discussing the ideas presented in the essay.
Thanks. —JCB

I have revised a few of the pages on the website, especially those having to do with The Redemption Saga: Looming Thunderheads. There is a new Redemption Saga page, and a page for Looming Thunderheads. I also altered the Fiction page and included a link to an old story.
The story is an old one I originally wrote in about 1989 when I was 11. I’ve included a little introduction with more information about it. If you do read it, please keep in mind that I was very young when I wrote that story, and it is now 20 years later. This story does not reflect my ability now, and I include it as a curiosity. Comments are always welcome.

I have installed WordPress on my website and will be using it for the foreseeable future for my online Journal. I am not sure if I will be mirroring these posts on LiveJournal or not, and I will have to see if I can import a few of my older posts into this for archiving. In the mean time, it took all night to tweak the stylesheets and the page layouts to make them appear the way I wanted (consistent with the rest of the website). I will probably change all the links and add an announcement about this to my main page within a day or two.
If anyone comes upon this journal and reads something that catches your interest, feel free to register and add a comment, or contact me directly.
Thanks!
[update: I have added the journal entries that I had hosted on the site, preserving the dates and times of the original postings. They appear as entries older than this one.]
